North/West Passage has established two task forces. The task forces were created to develop ongoing, dedicated groups focused on North/West Passage operations and freight activities and projects.
Operations Task Force
In 2013, an Operations Task Force was established to:
- Maintain relationships among operations staff in member states
- Enhance operations-oriented, maintenance operations, and transportation system management and operations (TSMO) related topics
- Support implementation of project findings
- Increase interaction during major events
The Operations Task Force meets periodically throughout the year to hear presentations and discuss a variety of topics. In addition, the task force hosts an annual technician’s forum. The purpose of the forum is to provide technicians with the opportunity to talk with each other and learn about practices on different areas from other states.
Freight Task Force
North/West Passage completed a number of freight-related projects before establishing a Freight Task Force in 2014. The purpose of the task force is to enhance North/West Passage activities with the freight community and efforts. Key activities have included:
- Conducting informational web meetings on topics of interest to the North/West Passage members.
- Conductoingbest practice (and practical) research on project funding opportunities.
- Identifying truck parking opportunities to best fit North/West Passage needs.
- Conducting exploratory research on the truck platooning concept, regulations, and supported the engagement of stakeholders to advance a multi-state truck platooning demonstration.
- Conducting an assessment of virtual weigh stations and applications for the North/West Passage.
- Conducting topic-specific assessments to document existing conditions, assess needs and issues, and identify opportunities for the North/West Passage. Topics of focus have included commercial vehicle traveler information, e-screening, and oversize/overweight movement.
