North/West Passage members are continually exploring innovative ways to generate accurate, reliable messages that describe road conditions and events to provide traveler information through various mechanisms.
The purpose of this project was to understand different approaches for automating the process of creating and updating traveler information. This was accomplished through interviews with a couple vendors of traveler information systems as well as interviews with a few state departments of transportation (DOTs). The findings from this project were not meant to provide an exhaustive list, but to identify automated traveler information creation examples, with the primary emphasis on North/West Passage member States.
The final report provides brief examples of automated or partially automated traveler information creation reports that were gathered from the interviews conducted. Partially automated examples may include information that is generated and ingested automatically, but an operator may review before approving or entering the information for dissemination in a state’s traveler information system. Partially automated may also include automatically augmenting existing event reports.
